AVAILABLE MID OCTOBER / UNFURNISHED Elsey Cottage, in the Parish of Little Dunkeld, was constructed in the late 1800’s. At the same time as the other grand Victorian villas in Birnam Glen. It is a listed building grade C. in a conservation area. The villas were built overlooking Dunkeld and Birnam railway station, as this was the railway terminus at that time, c. 1860-1880. For use as a Victorian holiday resort for those who chose to holiday there for the season.
One Beatrix Potter is well known for staying in one of the villas, much of this is well documented at the exhibition in Birnam Institute. The attraction was the environment and wildlife in the area. In her famous books one her characters Peter Rabbit was always getting into Mr. Macgregor’s vegetable garden thru the picket fence which is reputably Elsey Cottage garden.
Elsey Cottage is a solid traditional rough stone, whin stone and rubble, with lime mortar, built in the traditional Perthshire style of the day. The cottage was extended in the 1950’s with bricks and mortar with render finish. Some of the masonry featured in the old part of the building is of dressed stone blocks salvaged from a building long since demolished at the station. Victorian recycling. The slated roof is from the local slate quarries at Birnam and Dunkeld. The property has three bedrooms and three reception rooms formed over two levels.
Birnam Glen road was designed for ponies and traps to deliver goods and services to the tradesman’s entrance at the rear of the villas, hence access is a bit tight.
The front entrances of the villas face out over the railway station and the river tay.
In those bygone days the residents and guests would simply walk up the steps from the station to make a grand entrance at the front of the villas.
The rear garden includes large lawn with a mass display of daffodils and narcissi in April /May. There are herbaceous borders with variety of plants and shrubs including, Daphne, lily of the valley, an Acer tree, and yellow alpen rose in May. Some areas have black matting for weed control. There is a variety of wildlife including, red squirrels, deer, pheasants and garden birds. EPC - F.
