Living in Tollcross
A pleasant neighbourhood in the eastern suburbs of Glasgow, Tollcross offers a number of major benefits to local residents. It has a number of excellent amenities, plenty of wide open spaces and a relatively easy commute into the city centre. As an added bonus, it's home to a great selection of flats and houses which are more affordable than you might have thought.
If you mention this iconic neighbourhood to anyone who knows the city well, the chances are they will immediately think of Tollcross Park, an oasis of tranquillity that covers around 37 hectares. It's well-known for its beautiful Rose Garden, and young families will love the Glen Nature Walk and the impressive Children's Farm. The Victorian conservatory is a particular feature of the park.
Take to the roads and see the rest of Scotland
Motorists who are living in Shettleston, Tollcross or any other eastern suburbs are grateful for the fact that getting from A to B is easy here. The main A74 road offers a fast route into the city centre, for example, while motorway access to the rest of Scotland can be found via the nearby M8, M73 and M74. By road, Glasgow's George Square, often regarded as the very epicentre of this iconic city, is less than four miles away.
There are a number of wonderful houses and flats to rent in Tollcross, including several which are in traditional Glasgow tenement buildings. Once infamous for poverty, these days they are understandably seen as symbols of the city, combining a taste of history alongside a sense of optimism for the future. These properties, many of which were built in the era between 1880 and 1920, are much in demand in the 21st century.
A superb of choice of schools for children of all ages
As you might expect from a neighbourhood with a significant proportion of young families, you'll find an excellent selection of schools in and around Tollcross. This area of Glasgow is home to primary establishments such as Dalmarnock, St Pauls and Wellshot, while secondary schools include Eastbank Academy in Academy Street and Cardinal Winning School in Fullerton Avenue.
Many of the houses to rent in Tollcross are occupied by people who commute on a daily basis into the centre of the city. While Tollcross itself doesn't have a railway station of its own, there are several to be found nearby. They include Shettleston, Carntyne and Bellgrove to the north, Dalmarnock to the west, Carmyle to the south and Mount Vernon to the east. The latter offers direct links to Glasgow Central in less than 20 minutes. Several bus routes pass through Tollcross, including the 61, the 395 and the 164. Buchanan Street station, which operates on Glasgow's excellent Subway system, is around three miles away.
Sporting action is never too far away when you live in Tollcross
Fans of Celtic FC who are looking for flats and houses to rent in Glasgow will no doubt be tempted by the selection to be found here in Tollcross. The team's stadium is only a mile or so away from the neighbourhood, while Hampden Park is less than four miles from the area. Rangers fans have a little further - around five miles - to travel when match day comes around.
Just to the south of Celtic Park you'll find the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and Shawlands Greyhound Stadium is also within easy reach of Tollcross, while closer to home is the much-heralded Tollcross International Swimming Centre, which hosted swimming events during the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It's located in the south-eastern corner of Tollcross Park.
Tollcross can be the ideal location for students
The main campus of the University of Glasgow is around six miles away from Tollcross, so the neighbourhood has a somewhat smaller student population than many other locations. Closer to home, however, is Glasgow Caledonian University, which is located to the west. It's home to around 17,000 students and it was formed as the result of a merger in 1993.
