Living in Shettleston
The East End of Glasgow has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it plays host to an expansive spectrum of property types. From iconic tenements which are typically Glaswegian to brand new developments in peaceful cul-de-sacs, you can find a great range of options with ease. And the good news is that renting homes here is surprisingly affordable.
Thanks to the main A89 road which passes right through the heart of Shettleston, it's possible to drive to the centre of Glasgow in a matter of minutes. To the north of the neighbourhood, the M8 motorway offers speedy access to Glasgow to the west and Edinburgh to the east, as well as convenient links to major routes heading south to the border with England.
Needless to say, public transport links are also simple to find in this part of town, so people who are living in Baillieston, Shettleston and Parkhead can easily find their way to work in the morning. Shettleston's railway station is located in Balgair Terrace, and it offers direct trains via the North Clyde Line to Glasgow Queen Street, and they can take as little as ten minutes.
There are a number of healthcare amenities to be found locally, including Shettleston Health Centre in Old Shettleston Road. The nearest hospital is at Lightburn, on Carntyne Road, while others within easy reach of here include Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Stobhill Hospital and, to the west, the 1,600-bed Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, the largest of its kind in Scotland.
With such a wide selection of flats to rent in Glasgow, those which are located close to schools will be of particular interest to parents. Local primary establishments include St Pauls RC Primary in Anwoth Street and Eastbank Primary in Gartocher Road. The nearest secondary schools are likely to be Eastbank Academy in Academy Street and Bannerman High School to the east in Glasgow Road, Baillieston.
A viable option for the cost-conscious student
While Shettleston is around five miles away from the Gilmorehill campus of the University of Glasgow, it's worth bearing in mind that it's less than 20 minutes away by car. This area doesn't have as large a student population as many others, of course, but the affordability of the properties here make it a viable option for students who are on a tight budget.
Shettleston is rightly regarded as an urban neighbourhood in the East End of Glasgow, but that doesn't mean it's all about built-up hustle and bustle. Several green spaces are to be found here, including the excellent Budhill Park. Here you'll find a multi-use games area, football pitches and plenty of tranquil solitude in which to pass the time.
Within easy reach of Shettleston you can also spend time at Tollcross Park, home of the celebrated Tollcross International Swimming Centre, and Sandyhills Park, where you will also find an excellent 18-hole golf course. If you're a keen football fan, local side Shettleston Juniors FC play their home games at Greenfield Park in Old Shettleston Road.
To the east of Shettleston you'll find some of the most stunning countryside to be found anywhere in the West of Scotland. Many people who are on the lookout for houses to rent in Glasgow which offer pleasant views are drawn to these areas, and it's easy to see why. It would be wonderful to open the curtains every morning and gaze upon vistas of the Seven Lochs Wetland Park, for example, or perhaps of Drumpelier Golf Course.
