Living in Rutherglen

Some areas of Glasgow offer tranquil neighbourhoods while others tempt you with an easy commute into the city centre. Rutherglen, it should be noted, offers you both of these qualities and a great deal more. It's a likable area with both long-standing residents and incoming newbies, in part because the properties themselves represent great value for money in an increasingly popular metropolis.

One look at the flats to rent in Rutherglen will be all you need to convince you that this is a neighbourhood that attracts people from all walks of life. You'll find cosy studio properties for students at the University of Glasgow, chic apartments for young professionals who commute into the city every day and sizable multi-room flats for families with young children.

This latter group is well-served by the wide range of schools to be found in and around Rutherglen. Burgh Primary School in Victoria Street and St Marks Primary in Kirkriggs Avenue are both popular choices. For the older children, the selection features many excellent establishments, including Trinity High School and Stonelaw High School.

With so many houses to rent in Rutherglen, it comes as no surprise to discover a number of students living in the area. The main campus of the University of Glasgow is just five miles from here across the River Clyde, which means it can be reached by car in around 15 minutes. The Garscube Campus, which contains the School of Veterinary Medicine, is around nine miles from Rutherglen.

A night out without having to head to the city centre

While the centre of the city is pleasingly close for those who seek the bright lights in the evening, there are a number of more localised temptations to be enjoyed in Rutherglen. Main Street is home to a great selection of pubs, bars and restaurants, not to mention several takeaways for anyone who just wants a quiet night in with some mouth-watering food.

Sports enthusiasts who are living in Croftfoot, Rutherglen and the neighbouring areas are spoilt for choice. Hampden Park is just four miles from here, while the homes of Celtic, Rangers and Partick Thistle are all within six miles. Rugby side Glasgow Warriors are just a 15-minute drive away, and the greyhound racing at Shawfield Stadium is close by.

There are always a high number of flats to rent in Glasgow as a whole, so prospective tenants will often make their decision based on the simplicity of the commute to offices and seats of learning. For this reason as much as any other, Rutherglen stands up to comparison with almost any other neighbourhood in and around Scotland's most populous city.

Although Rutherglen is officially a town in South Lanarkshire rather than a suburb of Glasgow, its proximity to the city means they are inextricably linked. Rutherglen has its own railway station, located in Victoria Street, which offers regular direct trains to Glasgow Central. Even at peak times, it's possible to get to the centre of town in as little as six minutes.

Getting from A to B is so simple

Rutherglen is also a convenient location for those who need to access Scotland's motorway network on a daily basis. There are three junctions on the M74 for Rutherglen, and this major road connects nearby with the M8 and the M77. Several bus routes, including the 7, 46 and 165, pass through Rutherglen, while the nearest Subway station at Bridge Street is around three miles away.

The local area plays host to a wide range of shopping options for locals, including Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre on Main Street and a number of both chain and independent stores also along Main Street. While the commute into town for city centre shopping is easy, many local residents choose to make use of the Park and Ride service which is operated nearby from Shields Road.

The healthcare amenities here are excellent, with many locals registered for medical care at Rutherglen Health Centre in Stonelaw Road. There are several hospitals to be found nearby, including The New Victoria Hospital which is close to Hampden Park and Parkhead Hospital which is located just across the River Clyde. Glasgow Royal Infirmary is in Castle Street, just three miles from here.

Wide open spaces are never too far away

The first thing you might notice about Rutherglen is the ease of access to the centre of Glasgow, but it should be noted that there are a great many parks, gardens and wide open spaces offering residents a chance to really get away from it all. They include Queen's Park to the west and both Linn Park and Cathkin Braes Country Park to the south. It's reassuring to know that you're never too far away from the tranquillity.

One of the most pleasing aspects of living in Rutherglen is the absence of homogeneity in the area. The housing options here include everything from brand new developments right through to historic buildings which are as welcoming as they are iconic. Too many places in the UK look similar to each other these days, but this is an accusation that can't be levelled at Rutherglen.
