Living in Mount Florida
A pleasant residential area which is within easy reach of many of Glasgow's cultural landmarks, Mount Florida offers affordable housing for students, young professionals and large family groups. It's located in the south-east of the city to the south of Govanhill and to the east of Shawlands. Getting to and from the centre of Glasgow is a simple process thanks to the excellent public transport links.
Mount Florida has its own railway station, located in Cathcart Road, offering direct trains to Glasgow Central. Journey times are around ten minutes, making this location a popular spot for commuters who work in the city's many office blocks. The station was built in the 1880s, and it serves both Mount Florida and Battlefield. Local bus routes include the 7, the 31 and the 319.
Wherever you happen to be in Mount Florida, the chances are you will see Scotland's national football stadium on the horizon. Hampden Park is located here, and on match days the local buses and trains are likely to be extremely busy. When it's a little quieter, you might want to visit the stadium in order to take a tour of the celebrated Scottish Football Museum.
Get healthy, be happy
If you prefer to be taking part in sport rather than just watching it, you'll be pleased to know there are many local facilities to be enjoyed here. Several state of the art gyms can be found in and around Mount Florida, and there are cycling and jogging routes to be enjoyed in Queens Park and in the highly rated Pollok Country Park, which lies just a mile or two to the west.
While it's easy to get into the city centre for a night out, it's worth remembering that a great many pubs and restaurants are on your doorstep. Anyone who's already living in Battlefield, Mount Florida or Govanhill will already be aware of the fact that an excellent time can be had in the many watering holes and eateries along Cathcart Road, as well as in several other nearby streets.
Every year, thousands of incoming students head off in search of the most suitable flats to rent in Glasgow, and while many of them look to the north of the River Clyde several more find better value for money to the south of the water. The main campus at Gilmorehill is just four miles or so from Mount Florida, and for many students the travel is worth it because the rental costs here are often lower.
The area is popular with parents of young children, in part because the selection of schools is an impressive one. Mount Florida Primary School is located in Cathcart Road, just a stone's throw from Hampden Park Stadium, while other primaries in the locale include ones at Kings Park, Pollokshields and Shawlands. For older children, the excellent Shawlands Academy is within easy reach.
There are a number of excellent healthcare facilities for local residents, including the Mount Florida Medical Centre in Prospecthill Road and, nearby, the Battlefield Surgery in Battlefield Road. The New Victoria Hospital, which was opened in 2009, is to be found in Langside, while both the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital are within easy reach.
Easy routes both into and out of the city
With such a wide choice of houses to rent in Glasgow, it's often worth looking at neighbourhoods which offer easy access to the picturesque countryside which surrounds the city. Mount Florida is close to both the M77 and the A77, both of which offer a speedy route to the south of the metropolis, and to a number of areas of outstanding natural beauty.
A little to the north of Mount Florida lies the M74 motorway, which links up with the M8 to offer quick access to the centre of Glasgow and its many cultural landmarks. The excellent Glasgow Science Centre, for example, is less than four miles away, so you will never be too far away from the city's museums, galleries and attractions.
