Living in Garthamlock

For many people, the ideal location in which to live would be surrounded by greenery yet within a short, easy journey to the buzz of the city centre. In many ways, Garthamlock, in the north-eastern suburbs of Glasgow, is the perfect place in which to live. It boasts a number of excellent amenities, and it remains a popular neighbourhood with both newcomers and existing residents alike.

Commuters have a choice of a number of railway stations from here. Stepps, Carntyne and Shettleston are all within easy reach, and each of them offers a speedy commute into the centre of the city throughout the day. Carntyne, for example, is just six minutes away from Glasgow Queen Street, while Shettleston is just ten minutes away.

Several bus routes pass through Garthamlock into the city, so users of public transport networks who are looking for flats to rent in Glasgow will have plenty of options. Routes include the numbers 38 and 19, the latter of which comes from Easterhouse and heads to Glasgow's West Regent Street. Other buses get you to neighbourhoods such as Thorniebank, Castlemilk and Shettleston.

For motorists, the area is conveniently located for a number of major roads. The M8, which serves as a vital link between Glasgow and Edinburgh, passes through the southern edges of Garthamlock, while the M73 and the M80 are also close by. The city's international airport is located in Paisley, and is less than half an hour from here by car.

Time and space to savour the fresh air

People living in Carntyne and Garthamlock have every opportunity to escape the city with ease, thanks to the proximity of two superb green spaces. Hogganfield Park is on the western edge of Garthamlock, and it's an important nature reserve as well as a popular local getaway. To the east, the expansive Seven Lochs Wetland Park offers all the peace and tranquillity that you'll ever need.

While the centre of Glasgow is rightly regarded as something of a paradise for lovers of retail therapy, it's worth remembering that a state of the art out of town shopping and leisure facility can be found close to Garthamlock. Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre is home to many familiar brands, and it provides around 90 stores and almost 2,000 parking spaces.

Healthcare facilities here are very good, with several medical practices to be found nearby. They include the Gilbertfield Medical Centre in Gilbertfield Street, the Newhills Medical Practice and, to the west, the Glenmill Medical Centre. The nearest hospitals to Garthamlock include Lightburn Hospital, Stobhill Hospital and the largest of its kind in Scotland, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

If you're keen to stay fit and healthy, you will be impressed by the opportunities that surround you in Garthamlock. There are several gyms in the vicinity, as well as jogging and cycling routes which take you through the picturesque Hogganfield Park. In addition, the University of Strathclyde's playing fields at Stepps offer some extremely high quality sporting facilities.

It goes without saying that parents of young children will want houses to rent in Glasgow which are close to a selection of schools, and here in Garthamlock there are a number of options. They include Avenue End and Croftcoighn, both of which are primary schools, as well as Ashcraig Secondary in Avenue End Road and Smithycroft Secondary, just to the south of the M8 motorway.

The silver screens are waiting

There are times when nothing beats a night out at the movies, and anyone who lives in Garthamlock and the surrounding area is close to the excellent multi-screen cinema at the Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre. There are other cinema complexes nearby in Parkhead and Baillieston, not to mention several excellent theatres and movie houses in the centre of the city itself.

You'll find a wonderful selection of sporting venues in the area, including the highly rated Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which is less than four miles from here. Celtic's home ground is around three miles away, while the Tollcross International Swimming Centre is within easy reach to the south. Hampden Park, home of the Scottish Football Museum, is around six miles away.

There is a huge range of property types on offer in and around Garthamlock, so it's easy to find the place that ticks all the right boxes. The spectrum includes cosy apartments in brand new developments right up to large town houses built in the post-war era. You will also be able to choose from a sizable selection of flats and houses which were originally built as local authority housing.
