Living in Bridgeton

One of the more popular areas in Glasgow's East End, Bridgeton offers a comprehensive selection of flats and houses for those looking to rent. While retaining a sense of independence in a large metropolis, it's typically Glaswegian in many ways. If you're looking to move here, you'll be impressed by what you find.

A significant proportion of locals study or work in the centre of the city, and this is not surprising considering how close the neighbourhood is to the very heart of Glasgow. Trains from Bridgeton station, which is located in Bridgeton Cross, take just five minutes to get to Glasgow Central. Needless to say, the train route is well used in the evening as well by people making their way to and from the various pubs, clubs, restaurants and live music venues.

Many people who are living in Tollcross, Dalmarnock and Bridgeton are happy to make their way into the city by car. The main A74 road, which follows an ancient road that connects Glasgow with Carlisle, passes through the area, providing easy access to motorists at all times of the day. A little to the south lies the M74 motorway, which offers an easy route to Glasgow's international airport.

Sports fans in Bridgeton are spoilt for choice, with Celtic Park located within walking distance of many local residents. For supporters of Rangers, Ibrox Stadium is just five miles or so to the west, while Partick Thistle are to be found around four miles away. The Tollcross International Swimming Centre is also close, and the popular Shawfield Greyhound Stadium is located just across the River Clyde to the south.

Ideal for parents, ideal for students

Parents of young children will be impressed by the various schools which are to be found here. Primary schools include St Anne's RC in David Street and Sacred Heart in Reid Street. For older children, St Mungo's Academy, which was founded in 1858, is a popular choice, as is Whitehill Secondary, whose former pupils include singer Lulu.

There are a huge number of flats to rent in Glasgow, including many which are ideally suited for the student population. The University of Glasgow, which has a student body of around 26,000, is just four miles or so from Bridgeton, and it has proved to be a popular location for those seeking further education, in part because of the affordable rents that are on offer here.

While Bridgeton is in many ways a quintessential urban neighbourhood, it's worth remembering that many wide open green spaces are not too far away. Tollcross Park to the east is nearby, while the ever popular Glasgow Green is to the west. Just across the river from Bridgeton you'll find Cuningar Woodland Park, located around a loop in the Clyde and the former site of a number of important city reservoirs.

Anyone who's on a budget will be looking for value for money when they search for houses to rent in Glasgow, and for many of them the neighbourhood of Bridgeton is an understandably popular choice. Homes here are surprisingly affordable, and the choice includes everything from traditional Victorian terraced properties to brand new town houses in the heart of recently created developments.

A healthy place to live?

Locals are well served by the medical facilities to be found in the area. Bridgeton Health Centre in Abercromby Street is popular, as is the Main Street Medical Centre. There are several hospitals within easy reach of Bridgeton, including Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Castle Street, Stobhill Hospital in Springburn and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Govan, around five miles away.
