Living in Battlefield
There are a number of excellent areas to live in south of the River Clyde, and Battlefield is perhaps one of the finest of all. Housing options here include an eclectic mix of three- and four-storey properties, some of which have been converted into flats, as well as a tempting choice of brand new developments which include anything from cosy studio apartments to sizable town houses.
Battlefield, named after an important battle which took place back in 1568 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots and King James VI of Scotland, offers plenty of options for commuters who need to get to the centre of Glasgow every day. The nearest station, Langside, has regular scheduled services direct to Glasgow Central, with journey times as low as 14 minutes.
If you are a regular motorist who's looking for flats to rent in Battlefield, you'll be pleased to know that several major routes are to be found nearby. The A77 road, which links central Glasgow with the west coast of Scotland, passes close by, while the M74, M8 and M77 motorways are all just a short drive away. The M8 provides a fast, efficient road link to Edinburgh.
An excellent choice of schools for all ages
Battlefield has its own primary school, located in Carmichael Place, and there's another one nearby at Tantallon Road in Langside. Secondary schools include Hillpark, Holyrood and Shawlands Academy. The area is home to a sizable student population, in part because the University of Glasgow is less than five miles away across the River Clyde.
This is an ideal neighbourhood for sports fans, because both Rangers and Celtic Football Clubs are within easy reach. Hampden Park, home of Scotland's national football team and the Scottish Football Museum, is just a ten-minute walk from Battlefield Road, and the popular Shawlands Greyhound Stadium is close by, too. No wonder houses to rent in Battlefield are so in demand these days.
Away from sporting venues, Battlefield is also within easy reach of many of Scotland's most celebrated cultural landmarks. The Burrell Collection is in nearby Pollokshaws Road, the Riverside Museum is less than five miles away. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, one of the highlights for any visitor to Glasgow, is just across the river close to the city's university.
Healthcare amenities are easy to find here
The local area is well served by healthcare facilities, with Battlefield Surgery and the Regency Medical Practice to be found in different locations on Battlefield Road itself. The New Victoria Hospital is within easy reach, and both Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary are just a short drive from those who are living in Langside, Battlefield and Rutherglen.
An enjoyable night at the movies is easy to find if you live in the Battlefield area. There are major cinemas within easy reach, including the Odeon at Springfield Quay. There are two Cineworld complexes which are not far away at Silverburn and at the Glasgow Science Centre complex. The latter boasts an IMAX screen for those who prefer their films to be big, brash and bold.
The city's theatre district is not far from Battlefield, either. Playhouses such as the Theatre Royal Glasgow, the Citizens Theatre and the King's Theatre are extremely popular in the evenings. Live music venues within easy reach of Battlefield include the O2 Academy in Eglinton Street and the celebrated Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, which is to be found in Sauchiehall Street.
Battlefield is one of those areas with something for everyone
Newcomers to the city will be all too aware that the cost of flats to rent in Glasgow will vary from one neighbourhood to the next, and in this issue Battlefield compares well against many other areas. Close to the city but full of unique character, it's home to singles, couples and families from all walks of life, and it continues to be a popular district for newcomers to begin their Glasgow experience.
While Battlefield offers all the perks of traditional city life, it should be noted that fresh, clean air and wide open spaces are always easy to find here. Just to the north of the New Victoria Hospital lies Queen's Park, a 60-hectare oasis of calm which plays host to the annual Southside Festival. During snowy winter days, the park's hills become something of a magnet for sled and toboggan owners. In some of the locations within the park, you can enjoy dramatic views of the city and beyond.
